Carlo Sonino, also a member of the company, falls in love with Ethel and warns her against becoming infatuated with the amorous singer. Paurel becomes enchanted with Ethel, arousing the jealousy of the company\u0027s prima donna, Sabotini. When, after the first act, Ethel hears that Paurel has suffered an attack of the throat, she rushes backstage. Carlo, urged by Sabotini, follows and makes a scene, whereupon Ethel indignantly announces her engagement to Paurel. Paurel is unable to perform in the second act, and Carlo, taking his place, is vaulted to stardom. After Paurel is diagnosed as never being able to sing again, Bianca, a retired singer and Paurel\u0027s first love, reveals that Carlo is their son and pleads with the singer to give up Ethel for the boy\u0027s sake. After much soul-searching, Paurel refutes his selfish ways and agrees, thus freeing Ethel from her pledge to marry him.","wins":0,"nominations":0,"casts":[{"name":"John St. Polis","code":"nm0820821","characters":"Jean Paurel"},{"name":"Claire Adams","code":"nm0010845","characters":"Ethel"},{"name":"John Davidson","code":"nm0203383","characters":"Sonino"},{"name":"Alice Hollister","code":"nm0391220","characters":"Bianca"},{"name":"Lionel Belmore","code":"nm0069373","characters":"Impresario"},{"name":"Rose Dione","code":"nm0227946","characters":"Sabotini"},{"name":"Richard Tucker","code":"nm0875983","characters":"Ward"},{"name":"Tom Ricketts","code":"nm0725529","characters":"Potter"},{"name":"Frederick Vroom","code":"nm0089162","characters":"Doctor"},{"name":"Gino Corrado","code":"nm0180679","characters":"Secretary"}],"budget":null,"lifetimeGross":null,"openingWeekendGross":null,"worldwideGross":null,"keywords":[{"text":"opera"},{"text":"diva"},{"text":"understudy"},{"text":"based on play"}],"production":[{"id":"co0165124","text":"Frank Lloyd Productions"},{"id":"co0073678","text":"Goldwyn Pictures Corporation"}],"prestigiousAwardSummary":null,"moreLikeThisTitles":[]}
