She breaks the engagement when he refuses to reveal the sender or the contents of a letter he has received from his sister, Lola. Several years before, Andy Walker, an American, had led Lola a life of sin before they married, and then the two disappeared. Jos\u00e9 goes to \u0022The Devil\u0027s Bowl,\u0022 a notorious hideout for thieves, where he finds Lola ill with tuberculosis. Andy arrives, chased by four American ranchers for cattle rustling. Andy forces Jos\u00e9 to change clothes, and Jos\u00e9 is mistaken by the ranchers for Andy. They let Jos\u00e9 go, after Lola\u0027s pleas, but first they brand him on the forehead. A gunfight ensues between Jos\u00e9 and Andy in which the latter kills Lola. The Rurales capture Jos\u00e9 but later collaborate with him in Andy\u0027s capture.
